About Soluna Sleep
Know when to sleep. Wake up restored.
Our Mission
Soluna Sleep exists because most sleep advice is either too vague ("sleep more") or buried in academic research that doesn't translate easily into practical decisions. We believe that when people understand the science of sleep — specifically how sleep cycles, circadian rhythm, and timing interact — they make dramatically better choices about rest.
Our tools are built on well-established sleep science: the 90-minute sleep cycle framework validated across decades of polysomnography research, National Sleep Foundation age-based recommendations, and circadian biology principles. We translate this research into simple, beautiful calculators anyone can use in seconds.
The Name: Soluna
Sol (Latin: sun) and Luna (Latin: moon) — the two celestial bodies that have governed human sleep for all of history. Before artificial light, our sleep was perfectly synchronized with the solar cycle. Soluna Sleep is a nod to that ancient alignment, and a reminder that our bodies still run on those same rhythms.
The sun-and-moon motif throughout the site isn't just aesthetic — it represents the duality at the heart of sleep science: the interplay between the circadian rhythm (driven by light) and sleep pressure (driven by time awake), the two biological systems that together determine when and how well we sleep.
How Our Calculators Work
All three calculators are built on the same core framework:
- 90-minute sleep cycles: The average duration of a complete human sleep cycle (NREM stages 1–3 plus REM), validated across large-scale sleep studies
- 14-minute sleep onset latency: The population average for how long adults take to fall asleep after lights out, added as a buffer to all bedtime calculations
- NSF age ranges: Recommended sleep durations from the National Sleep Foundation's expert consensus panel, used in the Best Bedtime calculator
- Activity modifier: Additional recovery time for physically active individuals, based on sports science research into sleep and athletic performance
No data you enter is ever stored, transmitted, or used for any purpose beyond displaying your result. All calculations happen entirely in your browser.
A Note on Medical Advice
Soluna Sleep provides general wellness information based on publicly available sleep research. Our tools are educational, not diagnostic. If you experience chronic insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, suspected sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders, please consult a qualified healthcare professional or sleep medicine specialist.
Sleep science is a rapidly evolving field. We strive to keep our content accurate and current, but individual sleep needs vary and no calculator can replace a conversation with a doctor who knows your full health history.
